This graffiti, on a wall immediately caught my eye, even thought it was tucked away in the corner of a narrow and crowded side street. It is a minimalistic icon of a cow freshly painted in bright vermilion colour with a strong black outline. The vermilion colour is usually used to paint idols of certain hindu gods and is considered a sacred colour. The marigold necklace is an offering, converting the status of this icon into a wayside holy shrine.
I composed this image by positioning the icon of the cow off centre, filling one half while the other half was filled by a totally bare wall. This creates a Static Balance in the image. But the Tension in the image is created by the Contrast between the Subject and the Ground: the brightly coloured icon with smooth lines and flat colour vs the dull and highly textured wall. The contrast also helps separate the subject from the ground. The eye goes straight to the subject because of its huge Visual Weightage in the image and is perceived by the viewer in their own way based upon their Cultural Contexts.
And hence I have two different captions which present a different interpretation of the visual.
