Walking down a narrow street one late-morning, I spotted two folk dancers, preparing themselves for a performance. I took a few shots of them getting ready and then requested one of them for a formal portrait and he obliged. I positioned him against the side wall of the verandah, with him facing the street. It was a very tight space and was jam packed with the other performer and two other photographers. I was up against the wall on the opposite end.
I composed this image by positioning the Primary Subject against the plain blue wall. This helped create the Contrast and clearly separated the subject from the ground. The colour of the turban and flowers, and the warm tones of the skin and kurta also helped in creating the colour contrast against the cool blue wall. The one side open covered verandah on the left worked like a window lighting setup. The strong light in the street got diffused when it entered this space and lit up the subject from the left. I wanted this shot to be a classical studio type of portrait with the body at an angle, the subject looking straight into the camera and light from one side. I took a few shots this way and then suddenly his mobile phone rung and he answered it looking into the street. That action helped create an interesting moment, which I captured instantly.
